Graduate Student Research, Mentoring, and Outreach on Niwot ridge

We welcome graduate students from CU Boulder and beyond into the Niwot Ridge LTER program. Summer funding is available for graduate students whose research directly tests hypotheses in our current Niwot VIII proposal, and logistical support—in the form of transportation, equipment use, data entry and processing— is available for all graduate students. Potential CU Boulder graduate students should apply for admission to the university through normal channels. Graduate students from other universities are encouraged to contact a current Niwot Ridge investigator should they wish to conduct research on the ridge.

Opportunities for Graduate Students to Get involved

Join us on email and On Slack

We use our Niwot Ridge LTER email list to communicate information about meetings, resources, deadlines and collaborative opportunities, and we have a graduate student-specific email list as well. We also use Slack to communicate about ongoing projects and share meetings notes. To be added to our email lists and Slack channels, please send an email to our project coordinator.

Attend our Monthly All-Hands Meetings and Data Sessions

Niwot Ridge LTER all-hands meetings and drop-in data sessions are held the first Wednesday of each month. These meetings are a wonderful way to stay on top of our recent research findings, network with senior investigators from across departments and institutions, and gain valuable data skills. Keep track of upcoming meeting topics on our events page.

Apply for Research Support

Each year, we support graduate students conducting research on Niwot Ridge that tests hypothesis and predictions outlined in our current research proposal. Applications for funding allocations are typically sent out via our all-nwt email list in early February, with a deadline in late February or early March.

Science Communication and Outreach Course for Graduate Students

Each year, the Niwot Ridge LTER runs a one-credit seminar (EBIO 6100) to provide professional development for graduate students and staff. All graduate students who receive funding from Niwot are required to take this course.

Graduate students in EBIO 6100 create videos to communicate their research:

Graduate students in EBIO 6100 also share their research with the public at a variety of events. See them in action:
